Maynards Maynard opened his first sweet shop in 1876 and by early this century there were 100 shops operating. In 1909 Maynards produced the first Wine Gums a line for which the brand is still famous today.
The idea is said to have come from a temperance minister who was trying to encourage people to drink less alcohol. Contrary to popular belief the sweets have never contained any wine....or port or sherry... that was the whole point!
In 1999 Trebor Bassett created Monkhill Confectionery , a seperate company, to look after traditional brands like Maynards.
